TOP HAT

A top hat, dyed light brown with neat’s-foot oil, is in a Denton County jail's property room. That's a story for another time.

My first Topper, designed in 1971, may eventually survive to be considered on Antiques Roadshow. Top Hats have been my most frequent style worn during these past years. From 1971 to 1974, my own hat was more “hobo” than topper, and it was dyed green to contrast my red beard and handlebar mustasche “longhorns.” I looked like a six-foot, skinny beanpole leprechaun.

I was married in March 1975. I wore a new Top Hat with a brass wire or baling wire sewn into the overlapped brim edge. It set off a metal detector at DFW airport in 1976!
