REBEL CAP

The Rebel Cap also originated in my first hat and cap designs between 1971 and 1974. The Rebel Cap was wind resistant enough in design to be worn while riding a motorcycle. They were sometims known as "skid-lids" in 1971.

In 1974, a Texas couple came into a Lewisville (north of Dallas) flea market. They’d found a Confederate officer’s hat emblem in the ashes of a long-ago fire on their property. The C.S.A. letters were made imprinted into an oval brass shell. Lead had once been its inside backing for economy, rather than solid brass, like Union officers’ emblems. I bought it and fastened it to my Rebel Cap. The relic doubled my cap’s value, and I sold it before 1976.

The hat shown was inspired by my good friends, Frank and Cindy Mayes, when they came to Denton, Texas after Hurricane Katrina’s visit to New Orleans. They had photos of the water and storm damage in their home. Some pictures were simply of mold growing on the walls of their music studio. I dyed this Rebel Cap with a combination of oils and it came out with an antique finish that resembled their New Orleans experience.
